Community Engagement in Nature Restoration
Harper’s Island is a small low-lying island near Glounthaune in the northern section of Cork Harbour, Ireland. This case study highlights key processes, partners, skills, and contributions which made this a very
successful community-based nature restoration project.

HOW DID THE PROJECT DEVELOP
OVER TIME?
This case study was funded under the European Commission’s Horizon Europe-funded A-A Agora project (https://a-aagora.eu/). The A-A Agora project focuses on the need to protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, to protect valuable ecosystems located in coastal communities, and to mitigate the effects of climate change. The case study within the Cork Demonstration Area of A-A Agora was compiled through desk research and through conducting semi-structured interviews with members of the Harper’s Island Wetlands steering committee, BWI members, and Cork County Council staff and elected members. The case study design and approach was co-created with the steering committee.

- Harpers Island wetlands: Bird in Flight & Visitors listen to a volunteer tour guide.
- Men’s shed & Harpers Island volunteers erect a new sign in Harpers Island wetlands.
- Beautiful plants & hanging baskets in Glounthaune Village. A new ‘Insect hotel’ (re-cycled tin) was placed in the garden beds of the village green. Thank you to Yvonne & Tidy Towns.
- Beautiful & sunny day for the ‘Model T Ford Event’ held in Craig’s field. The Irish Model T Ford Club came to visit with over 70 cars.
- The event was organised by Wiliam Cuddy.
- A Michael Collin’s Commemoration in Glounthaune Village.
- We welcomed our volunteer:
- ‘Soldiers’ & ‘Michael Collins actor’
- William Cuddy’s model cars, model truck & motorcycle
- Our Piper & Trumpet Players
- Knockraha Historic & Heritage Society
- UPSTART FESTIVAL: We had an amazing music festival in Craig’s field. An event enjoyed by everyone.
- Halloween in Glounthaune Community Centre & decorations in Glounthaune Village.
- Winning teams of ERIN’S OWN, Glounthaune…..Well done to you.
- New Sensory Garden opens in Craig’s field. Well done to everyone for your superb work. Cork County Council/Tidy Towns/Men’s Shed to name just a few.
- The fabulous Christmas Craft Fair held in Glounthaune Community Centre. We raised vital funding for our community centre & donated to Cork Simon Community.
- Santa & Reinders light up Glounthaune, a wonderful sight to behold.
- Glounthaune Church, ‘The Sacred heart’ displays a beautiful Christmas Tree and new Lights. Well done it looks amazing.
- Fitzpatrick’s Shop: Christmas Cakes & lovely delights are available here
- Christmas Tree & Frosty Snow people brighten up the village: Village Residents organised this.
- ‘The Rising Tide Bar’, Glounthaune Village looks very festive.
